Halong
With the colourful meaning of ‘Bay of Descending Dragons’, Ha Long Bay conjures up all sorts of mystical imagery. The Bay is famous for its unusual karst rock formations that make an enchanting backdrop and seduce visitors with its romantic setting. Unfortunately word of Ha Long’s charms has got out so don’t expect the romance all to yourself!
Old Chinese style ‘junk’ boats cruise through the Bay in their dozens, dropping off travellers at this or that island, which in some ways lessens the appeal, although the scenery is still its stunning self irrespective. However, many of the boats disappear by early evening so if you book an overnight stay on a deluxe imperial junk you can traverse around the Bay’s many islands (there are almost 2000!) whilst lounging on the deck of the boat by the light of the moon – does life get much better?
Some of the islands have accommodation options so be sure to check out an island or two. Depending upon which islands you choose you can organise activities such as cycling through rice paddies, kayaking, monkey spotting or just kicking back on the beach and taking in the splendour of the views. There are also a large number of caves in the area, of which around 20 are open to tourists and are well worth a visit.
On your boat trip watch out for floating fishing villages, communities of Vietnamese who live permanently on floating house boats, basic in construction but a way of living that connects the community to each other wholeheartedly.
It won’t take long for Ha Long Bay to cast its spell over you and this beautiful region is bound to become a firm highlight of any trip to Vietnam.
