Terengganu
The Terengganu coast, overlooking the South China Seas, is one of only six spots in the world where giant Leather back Turtles clamber ashore to lay eggs. The coastline has a series of long sweeping beaches of pure white sand, punctuated by charming fishing villages. Life on the east coast is unhurried and little changed by time.
As with Kelantan, a strong Malay cultural influence presides here and little evidence of development, meaning that visitors are treated to a slice of traditional Malay life, with an emphasis on arts and crafts and old fashioned past times such as kite flying. This holds great appeal for visitors seeking a taste of old Malay style living.
Visitors also come to the region for access to Terengganu’s picturesque offshore islands of Pulau Redang, Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Perhentian, all of which are made up of idyllic beaches and offer great snorkelling opportunities.
Also tantalising to travellers is the local cuisine, including speciality ‘Sata’ – fish cakes wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over a grill – delicious!
