Malacca

Malacca is the historical province of Malaysia and on visiting the region you will see evidence of past ‘conquerors’, including the British, Portuguese, Chinese and the Dutch. This adds to the interest of the architecture and cultural melting pot. In bygone days Malacca was a major port along the spice route. The fascinating history will become more apparent when you visit the churches, forts, temples and other architectural buildings all of which add a piece to the colourful historical jigsaw.

There are also fabulous shopping opportunities in Malacca, including Jonkerstraat, a street famous for antiques (although don’t expect them to come cheap!). There is a night market each evening selling everything you could possibly wish to buy as a tourist from food to cheap clothes to tacky and not so tacky souvenirs.

Fabulous local cuisine is served up in the many cafes and restaurants, as well as tasty fare sold sizzling hot on the street stalls. Malacca is famous for ‘cendol’ (pronounced ‘chendul’), a sweet dessert of coconut milk, strange green noodles and Malacca sugar.
