Kelantan
Unspoilt and undeveloped, Kelantan offers visitors an insight into traditional Malay way of life, without the tourist trimmings. This coastal and inland region sits on the East Peninsular of Malaysia and incorporates beautiful untouched beaches, villages that have remained unchanged by modern times, huge stretches of tropical forest and also a vast National Park.
Life goes on as it has done for decades and this is the big draw card for visitors who are tempted to explore Kelantan. Children still play children’s games such as spinning tops and giant kite flying, rather than modern day TV games and there is a sense of innocence about it all that is very touching. A favourite past time is bird-singing competitions! Local women pass the time with traditional handicrafts such as batik and weaving, making exquisite pieces you are unlikely to find in the bigger cities. There is a large vibrant market weekly.
With a strong tradition in martial arts, shadow plays, as well as musical offerings such as playing the rebana (giant drums), there is always something to watch and learn. Mostly though, you will be mesmerized by everyday life in a region unmarred by commercial development.
Walk Gunung Stong Mountain, take a river cruise, laze on a secluded beach and enjoy a slice of Malaysia relatively untouched by tourism.
