Macau

Nestled in the south eastern area of China, Macau City was once a sleepy slow paced town but is now undergoing rapid development to keep up with the modern consumerism that has taken China by storm.

However, Macau City has still retained much of its old character and has currently two faces, the face of ancient culture and the face of 21st century development. This provides for a unique and interesting trip. The city takes its name from the word ‘Magao’, meaning a shrine dedicated to Mazu, a sacred sea goddess.

With a rich heritage from both its Chinese and Portuguese past, Macau has many beautiful buildings and temples to entice. The blend of East and West is a heady cocktail for visitors who one minute might be strolling across the uniquely black and white old paved square of Largo do Senado and another minute find themselves right in the heart of the mega casinos in the gambling district, also known as the Las Vegas of the East. Elsewhere, elegant Portuguese baroque style buildings house shops bearing international labels, the contrasts of old and new are everywhere you look!

Macau is made up of a peninsula and islands and it is easy to hop across the connecting bridges to Taipa and Coloane for some R&R.

A visit to Macau can be almost anything you want it to be.
