Guangzhou

Guangzhou also goes by the name of ‘City of Five Rams’ after the fable that depicts five gods riding into Guangzhou on five rams, bringing to the city its first grain. It is an ancient city, dating back almost three thousand years and with a colourful history of democracy and revolution, reflected in the many monuments peppered throughout the city marking the remembrance of various symbolic uprisings.

Guangzhou is one of China’s significant trading, political, and scientific centres, with a busy port location at the north of the Pearl River Delta. The commercial aspect is only one face of the city though and visitors may be surprised to find that Guangzhou is one of China’s greenest cities, home to a long list of tourist attractions.

Nationally, Guangzhou is held in high esteem for its cuisine, particularly Cantonese, ranking first in the country for the sheer number of restaurants and tea-houses.

Some of the many visitor attractions are listed below.

Temples: As with most large cities in China there are many temples. Some of the most well known in Guangzhou include Guangxiao Temple which is a pilgrimage site for Zen Buddhists and Sanyuan Temple which is the oldest Taoist temple in the city. Perhaps the most popular temple for visitors is Liurong Temple, also known as the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, dating back to the 6th century. This temple is well known for its beautiful Flowering Pagoda which has eight sides and seventeen storeys!

Museums: Guangzhou has a number of very good museums that will provide visitors with a great deal of insight into the history of the city and China at large. Of note is the Guangzhou City Art Museum, which contains a vast collection of artwork including traditional calligraphy and scriptures, paintings, sculptures and Buddhist art. Also fascinating is the Guangzhou Revolutions History Museum which contains relics and information that tell the history of the region all the way through from the Opium War to modern days.

Mountains: Visit White Cloud Mountain and Lotus Mountain for spectacular views across the city from the top of the lookout, which can be reached by walking trail. These are great places to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy metropolis centre.

Parks: Guangzhou has more than its fair share of green and with wonderful parks it is fun and relaxing to join the locals partaking in some recreational activities such as football, badminton, dance, strolling and gentle martial arts. Some of the parks are noted for their rare and unique flowers, particularly Yuntai Garden.
