Anshun

Located in Guizhou Province, Anshun is a pleasant town set within a karst limestone region.  From the town, it is a relatively easy journey to the province's main attractions, Huangguuoshu Falls, China's largest waterfall, and the Longgong Caves.  Historically, Anshun was an important centre for the tea and opium trade, and is still the most important town in the western park of Guizhou Province.  Today it is renowned for its production of kitchen knives, batik and a fearsomely strong Anjiu brand of liquor.  It is also a significant base for construction of aeroplanes and cars.  Attractions in the town itself include Donglin Si, a Buddhist temple dating back to around 1405AD, and the huge Sunday Market, where you can buy pretty much anything!

Huangguoshu Falls
81m wide and 74m tall, these waterfalls are the largest in all of China, and therefore a noteworthy tourist attraction in the Anshun area.  Most spectacular after rain, the falls can be heard from miles around, and the mist that rises up from the falls carries all the way up to the village of the same name.  Originally explored for its hydroelectric potential, the region is gradually being made more and more accessible to visitors, and there are around 18 falls, four underground rivers and around 100 caves in total in the region, which covers a staggering 450sqkm.    Buses run daily from Anshun to the falls at 10am (more frequent in the summer).  If you want to see the falls in their true glory, don't visit during March and April (the end of the dry season) as the flow can dry to as little as  a trickle.

Longgong Caves
15 miles south of Anshun is the series of caves call Longgong.  Just a small proportion of the total cave complex is currently open and visitors take a boat trip through the cave.

Zhijin Cave
Even if you are not a cave fan, you cannot fail to be impressed by Zhijin Cave, which at 6 miles long and 150m high is the biggest in China, and one of the biggest in the world. Guided tours are compulsory.
